AN OVERVIEW OF ROSÉ WINES IN ITALY

A general picture of rosé wines in Italy.

A total of just over 120 million bottles, equal to about 7% of the national total in Do-Ig. Half of the production with bubbles, between sparkling and sparkling, and 60% with the IGT label. The productive heart in the Northeast, with Emilia Romagna and Veneto which alone Cuban for 56% of the total bottling, followed by Puglia, Lombardy and Abruzzo”.

In 2020, the number of bottles of Italian rosé wine produced amounted to 122 million. Within this segment, the most popular category is that of still wines, with 56% of the total (68 million). The remainder is for sparkling wines (20 million, plus 4 for varietals) and sparkling wines (33 million). The Italian region that holds the majority share in the production of rosé wines is Veneto, which absorbs about 30% of the total. Following, there are Emilia Romagna with a 25%; Puglia, Lombardy and Abruzzo with 24% equally divided.

The production division of the leading regions is very different: with the entry of the rosé type for Prosecco, Veneto has seen the incidence of sparkling wines jump to first place (44%), followed by still and sparkling wines. Sparkling wines that obviously are predominant in Emilia Romagna (75% share), while the still versions are the absolute protagonists in Puglia (almost totalitarian), Lombardy (70%) and Abruzzo”.

Still rosé wines are the most popular type, in which Bardolino remains the leader with 9 million bottles. Very good numbers also for Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo (8.1 million) and Rubicone Sangiovese (6.8 million). Then there are the still rosé wines of Salento and Puglia which are gaining more and more importance, ranking in fourth and fifth place.

The production of sparkling rosé wines is mainly a question of two regions: Emilia Romagna with 24 million bottles out of a total nation of 33 million (72%) and Veneto with 8.2 million pieces, a quarter of the total“.
