ITALIAN SPARKLING WINE: A RAPIDLY EXPANDING PHENOMENON

In 2020 the sparkling wine bottlings were very high and involved many Italian regions.

Just over 750 million bottles, of which over 600 million with designation of origin, with an export propensity of over 70%“.

Last year Italy witnessed a very interesting phenomenon: sparkling wine bottling was very high. The total amounted to 5.6 million hectoliters, or 750 million bottles of 750 ml, of which 438 million DOC sparkling wines, 182 million DOCGs, 6 million IGTs and the rest of varietals. “In addition to Glera and internationals, local vines are small-big protagonists, such as Lambruschi, Malvasie, Grillo, Nero d’Avola, Negroamaro and Vermentini. An unequivocal demonstration that the spumante fever, ignited by the global success of Prosecco, has infected the whole of Italy”.

The highest number of bottlings was recorded in Veneto, for a total share of 528 million bottles (82% of the total). Here the production and bottling of sparkling wine have concerned mainly DOP sparkling wines (99.9%).

Piedmontese sparkling wines follow (69 million pieces, 11% of the total) and Lombard ones, with a share of 3%, equivalent to 21.3 million bottles. Over the 1% share of the other two regions: Trentino (12 million) and Emilia Romagna (8.8 million)“.

In Lombardy and Piedmont, the composition by type was slightly different than in Veneto: the majority concerned DOP sparkling wines, but the share of varietals was around 15%. More varied situation in Emilia Romagna and Sicily, where the bottling involved PDO, PGI and other varietals. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the other hand, the varietals were the main protagonists in the bottling of sparkling wine.
