In the US market, the trend of zero/low alcohol wine is becoming increasingly popular.
“For decades, US wine consumers have happily purchased wines with alcohol levels averaging 14.5% and higher. Now, with the growing trend towards moderation and a healthy lifestyle, the category of wines with low alcohol content (Nolo) has arrived”.
This category of wine, already widespread in Europe and in some areas of Asia, has grown considerably in the last period in the United States. “Nielsen reported 37% dollar growth in non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits in 2020 compared to 2019”. Zero/low alcohol wine, according to a study, will record 31% growth by 2024.
“A Wine Intelligence poll showed that 26% of Americans said they are likely to buy wines with low or no alcohol content. In addition, a NielsenIQ update on spirits for beverages reported that non-alcoholic wines increased by 36.8% in volume and were one of the few growing areas”.
The main challenge for the producers, however, concerns the taste. “Not all consumers want sweeter style wines that appear to be in zero alcohol wines, while low alcohol wines, ranging from 0.5% to 10%, have a lighter mouthfeel“.
