In the last ten years the organic phenomenon has gone crazy in the world, also involving the wine sector. The cultivation techniques with the organic method, in fact, have increased considerably in this period of time. Globally the constant growth of this phenomenon refers both to the extension of the areas planted with vines and to the interest of the consumer, who is increasingly attentive and sensitive to the environment.

According to the research conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture – Ismea, globally about 6.7% of the 7 million hectares of vineyard area is cultivated with the organic method. This means that a total of 500,000 hectares in the world are cultivated with organic techniques, more than double compared to ten years ago. “In Italy, in 2019 there were 107 143 hectares of organic vineyards (+109% in the decade), with an incidence of almost 19% on the total vineyard area of our Country, the highest in Europe and in the world“. At the regional level, the organically cultivated area is almost equally distributed: 22.8% North, 22.5% Center, 25.5% South and 29.2% Islands. The winemakers who use organic techniques are approximately 18 thousand; these reach 25 thousand if we consider all the players in the wine sector.

On the consumption front, it is above all abroad that organic wine enjoys greater appreciation, with Germany and France leading the way among the consuming countries, while Italy plays an important role in the sector exports. Italian organic is a high quality product, it is no coincidence that Italy is the first European exporter and second in the world“.
