THE ENCOURAGING NUMBERS OF CHIANTI

In the first quarter of 2021, Chianti is achieving excellent results.

The + 31% of bottles sold registered by Gallo Nero brand wines in the first four months of 2021 is almost obvious, if we take the first quarter of 2020 as a reference“.

The really encouraging figure, however, is + 7% compared to the first quarter of 2019, which confirms the positive trend of the denomination. Confirmation that also comes from the president of the Consortium Giovanni Manetti who explains how the qualitative growth of wines and the loyalty of consumers, mainly in foreign markets, have contributed to this increase. “Among foreign markets, which account for 80% of revenues, the United States remains the first customer (33% of total sales) compared to Italy, which accounts for 20% of sales“. Also in terms of average prices, a slight recovery is being observed with 257 euros/hectolitre, albeit below 6% compared to 2020. Overall, the turnover of Chianti is around 500 million euros.

The growth of the Gran Selezione continues, a type introduced in 2014. From the initial 40 companies, more than 160 today produce it. The bottles represent 7% of the volumes of the DOCG, but their turnover accounts for 17% of the total and there is margin for further growth”.

Finally, Chianti is witnessing another positive trend in continuous growth: the surface organically managed. Currently this concerns about 52.5% but President Manetti believes that a value of 65% can be reached within a few years.
