THE PRODUCTION OF THE ROERO DOCG RETURNS TO GROW

Restart for the bottling of the Roero Denomination and momentum towards total sustainability.

After a record-breaking 2019, the effect of the pandemic was felt with a -7% on the bottling of Docg Roero throughout 2020, but the current year has restarted in contrast, with double-digit growth, above the 15%“.

The Roero Protection Consortium, which today represents 1233 hectares of vineyards and 233 between members and winemakers, is seeing a restart of its bottling and is confident in view of the end of the year. In fact, as anticipated, if last year there was a decline of 7%, at the moment, in the first half of 2021 the growth is around 15%, a truly encouraging fact. “Dop not only counts white Roero, based on Arneis, but also red Roero, based on Nebbiolo. A type that has grown by over 20% in the last three years and that has exceeded half a million bottles in 2020. Third Nebbiolo-based DOCG in terms of number of bottlings“.

Although bottling is increasing, the quotations of the appellation in the form of bulk wines are recording a decline (200 euros/hectolitre). The cause is mainly to be identified in the increase in sales of the denomination (especially of the white type) in organized distribution, which is worth about 15% of volumes.

For this denomination, the Consortium is considering moving towards a total approach to sustainability, prohibiting the use of chemicals for weeding, among other things. “Producers are turning towards greater protection of biodiversity. This is not an easy goal, for a district that has 20% of certified organic farms, with almost half of the members already using sustainability-oriented systems, but where the golden flavescence hits hard every year and against which we will continue to act with the methods currently used. in use“.
